HOW TO READ MUSIC FOR THE HAMMER DULCIMERA HOW-TO BOOK FOR BEGINNERS
(All pages in the booklet are clear and white. The dark coloration is from trying to
enhance the visibility for the photos here.)
COMPLETELY SELF-EXPLANATORY
WRITTEN BY AN EXPERIENCED HAMMER DULCIMER PLAYER AND TEACHER
Although it is not necessary (no matter what anyone tells you) to read music to play
the hammer dulcimer, it can make the process of playing easier. Reading music is not that
complicated. Music notation is just another language of symbols, and there aren't that many
symbols to learn (unless you want to write musical scores!).
The booklet lists each major symbol for music notation and gives a diagram and explanation.
All you need is a sheet of music to follow along. (Pick a simple song with a
one-line melody - not an orchestral score!).
Use the booklet of symbols and match them to your piece of music. It will take a little time,
but you only use a few symbols in a piece of simple music, many of which will repeat in a song.
In no time at all you will be reading music without even thinking about it.
Have fun!
I also have a
beginner hammer dulcimer chord booklet
, a
beginner hammer dulcimer
embellishment booklet
and
fully-embellished beginner hammer dulcimer song booklet
listed. Check them out also.
I
have also written a
booklet of beginner jam music
for hammered dulcimers
and
all other instruments that play
in the key of D.
It has everything you need to jam with other instruments. It is
NOT color-coded or embellished
. For hammer dulcimer it just has the simple melody, schematic with melody notes indicated, names of notes that are in the melody, and words to the songs. It also has information for other instruments, including mountain dulcimer tab. There are 19 songs. Check it out if you would like to be able to jam with other beginners.
