ulcimers By J.R is based in Ohio and has been building Fine, Concert Quality Appalachian Mountain Dulcimers for over 30 years. About The Dulcimers
Every Dulcimer made by Dulcimers By JR consists of the Highest Quality Woods available.   JR's Dulcimers, (except student) are made from hand selected woods especially for their uniqueness & beauty. Unlike some builders who use the straightest, uniform woods they can find, JR seeks out tree logs that he knows will yield a building material for an instrument as unique as the individual buying it.
The Student Dulcimers are built from Baltic Birch which consists of  full Birch plies.  Our Jobe's Coffin & Premium Concert Dulcimers are built from Local Ohio Hardwoods selected by hand and specially cut to JR's specifications.  A few examples of the various Hardwoods used are, Black Walnut, Oak, Maple, Fiddle Back Maple, Cherry, Sycamore, Sassafras, & Sitka Spruce to name a few.  As was the case with the Old Builders, JR can give you a history of the wood your Dulcimer was built from.
All of the Hardwoods used by JR are stored & air dried for 5 to 6 years before it comes into the Workshop & becomes a Dulcimer By JR.  JR
rarely
uses Kiln Dried Hardwoods. Air drying wood is especially important because as the wood dries naturally  the  sap cells crystallize making the wood more resonant.
All the fingerboards for JR's Dulcimers are Handmade in JR's Workshop. All fingerboards  feature scales cut by a machine designed by JR to ensure every Dulcimer that leaves his Workshop has a true scale.  JR's fingerboards  include the 6 1/2 fret & uses Stewart-McDonald or Martin Guitar Fret-wire.
Every one of JR's Dulcimers also include High Quality, Enclosed Geared Tuners.
You will never find a Dulcimer from Dulcimers By JR with wooden  Friction Pegs.  Friction Pegs give Dulcimers that "Old Time" look but won't keep your Dulcimer in tune and ready to play.
As JR always says " If you can't  tune it you can't play it!!"
Finally, each & every Dulcimer is finished with a Fine Quality, Clear Furniture Lacquer.  JR doesn't believe in hiding Beautiful Hardwoods under a Stain.  If the wood isn't Beautiful enough to stand on it's own why use it in the first place?!
