Comic strip character Police Detective Dick Tracy
and his signature hat
premiered on October 4, 1931, in the Chicago Tribune newspaper. He was
instantly popular and appeared in newspapers across the United States.
The strip's popularity also resulted in the creation of fan
merchandise including novelizations, toys, and games... then action figures, apparel, and more with renewed interest in the 1990 film, "Dick Tracy," starring Warren Beatty.
Still... the rarest of Dick Tracy collectibles remains this rare 1940's/mid-century gem of a fedora hat with the internal sweatband set with "DICK TRACY OFFICIAL HAT" clearly print-embossed in the internal sweatband.
Few have survived over the course of some 75 years.
Hardly a "toy," as such. This hat is fashioned from what appears to be genuine wool felt... same as a gentleman's hat from a better bygone era... complete with a sewn brim edge, a shimmering grosgrain ribbon band, internal sweatband, even finished with a little ribbon bow inside.
We found a hugely similar hat with the same
"DICK TRACY OFFICIAL HAT" label sold by "HERITAGE AUCTIONS... The World's Largest Collectible Auctioneer." Their description read:
"Dick Tracy Official Hat Premium - Brown (Miller Bros. Hats, 1942-47).
This kid's-sized brown felt fedora was a premium issued in the 1940s by Miller Bros. Hats. A tag on the inside leather band reads "Dick Tracy Official Hat."
Ours shows no maker's label.
Not tagged for size... it's clearly a children's hat.
