    Description

KM 157, one year counterstamp, on 25 centavos coins of 1887 KM 127.1. Quarter dollar size silver coin, with counterstamps on both sides.
During the financial upheaval of 1914-1925, many Central and South American countries experienced massive inflation. For Costa Rica, this resulted in the devaluation of their currency, the change from 90% silver coins to those with 50% silver (or no silver at all), and the counterstamping of most of their coinage to double the face value of the old coins. This is why it is difficult to locate silver coins from Costa Rica dated prior to 1924, unless they have been counterstamped.
It is popular to collect the 1923 counterstamps by the date/type of the host coin.
