Description
KM 4, 18 year type, issued in the name of the Central American Republic, by Guatemala. Silver crown, with five mountains (volcanoes) on the obverse.This variety (which is listed in Krause) has the assayer AE over MA; the date is 6/2; and CREZCA was originally spelled with an S.
As Iturbide was being overthrown in Mexico (1823), the areas of Central America now known as Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Nicaragua joined into a confederation called the Central American Republic. By 1839, all but El Salvador had withdrawn from the confederation, although Costa Ricas, Honduras and Guatemala continued to strike coins in the style of the confederation for many years (Honduras continued until 1861.)
